Thirty-Four

The beds in the inn were not comfortable. The sheets smelled of mildew and were scratchy against Freya’s skin. Like they had been dragged through salt water, then left to dry.

She tossed and turned, trying to find some sense of comfort. She contemplated the fact she might have become accustomed to the ship’s constant sway – that perhaps she missed it rocking her to sleep. But that thought made her even more bitter. A pirate ship was not something she would miss.

Ever.

Or so she tried to tell herself….

Finally she flipped onto her back and glared at the ceiling, listening to the intermittent sounds of footsteps thunking down the hall and the distant hum of a bard’s pining song.

She rested one hand behind her head while the other toyed with the dagger on top of the blanket. Sleeping in commons always made her nervous, and after Hex’s warning, that angst had only doubled. She’d already scouted the room, making sure every shadowed space was empty, and checking the locks on the door and window. The window sat above the street, offering nothing but stone to crash into should she need to jump from it. Not an ideal situation.

Once, back in Orlenea, she’d had an encounter with a man who had come into Hetty’s room at the Chateau while she’d been using it to sleep. Between waking up to him stripping off his pants, and Madam Faswanne having her dragged out by her hair, it had not been a pleasant experience.

Her thoughts drifted to Orlenea, to Kila and her beasts, and the complete and utter chaos that must have darkened the coastal desert land. She wondered what had become of the Chateau and its owner. Had Madam Faswanne weaselled her way among Kila’s allies? Or had Kila done one thing good, and rid the world of the nasty woman once, and for all?

Thoughts of Kila made Freya’s temples ache, and she closed her eyes, trying to muddle through what she did and did not know. They did not have a plan – that much she understood clearly. She wasn’t sure whether they were relying on Freya’s insight or Bryn’s – perhaps they were hoping both held the answers to Kila’s demise – but either way, they were no better off now than they were when they started this journey. They needed Bryn – she needed Bryn.

Eventually Freya’s eyes grew heavy, and her thoughts drifted to a pair of molten green eyes, framed by lashes and curling steam. She wondered where the pirate captain was now. Probably sleeping soundly in his room, or flirting shamelessly with the pretty barmaid she’d seen serving the men in the tavern. Or perhaps he’d wandered back to Lola’s house, keen to rekindle whatever love had once existed between them...

A knock came at the door. Soft

Freya jolted from her drowsy thoughts, heart thumping as she sprang upright, dagger in hand. She held her breath, listening. The light peeking beneath the door shifted. She heard the soft grind of boots against the floorboards.
